The  Higher National Diploma (HND) in Sport & Exercise Science is a qualification designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a career in the sports and exercise industry. This program is typically completed over two years.

The Higher Nationals in Sport & Exercise Science with the specialization in Exercise, Health & Lifestyle
aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a career in the health and fitness industry. The specific objectives of this program are:

To develop an understanding of the physiological and psychological principles of exercise and physical activity, and their effects on health and wellbeing.

To develop skills in exercise programming, prescription, and delivery, and to apply these skills in a practical exercise environment.

To develop an understanding of the role of nutrition in exercise and health, including the effects of macronutrients, micronutrients, and hydration on performance and recovery.

To develop an understanding of health promotion and public health strategies, including the identification of risk factors for chronic disease and the promotion of healthy lifestyles.

To develop transferable skills, including communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, which can be applied in a range of health and fitness settings.

To prepare students for employment in the health and fitness industry, including personal training, exercise referral, and health promotion, or for further study in a related field.

Level 4 courses come in the form of 1st year of a bachelor's programme or HNC (Higher National Certificate). Depending on the type of associate degree a student may be able to start their 2nd year of bachelor's (The course must be the same as the one they are applying for)

Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Exercise, Health & Lifestyle
● Requires at least 120 credits = 8 units, each with a value of 15 credits

● 6 core units, 1 mandatory specialist unit and 1 optional unit

● Total qualification time = 1,200 hours

● Total guided learning hours = 480 hours
● All units are at Level 4

Level 5 courses come in the form of the 2nd year of a bachelor's programmes or an HND (Higher National Diploma). Depending on the type of associate degree a student may be able to start their 3rd year of bachelor's (The course must be the same as the one they are applying for). 

Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Exercise, Health & Lifestyle

Requires 240 credits, of which 120 credits are at Level 5 (7 units) and
120 credits are at Level 4 (8 units)
Total qualification time = 2, 400 hours
Total guided learning hours = 960 hours
Mix of core, specialist and optional units, totalling 240 credits
Optional units are selected to make up the remaining credit value
Specialist units can also be selected as optional units for the General pathway,
and for any of the specialist pathways
Only one specialist unit is permitted to be used as optional from any given specialist pathway

Progression

Following the successful completion of this course, students will be able to progress on to a Top-Up degree, or gain employment both within professional or community sport.

*Students are able to apply to a campus-based top-up degree or into the final year of a campus-based three year degree programme. Blended Sport Science top-up is subject to validation.
